Studio Theatre at Virginia Tech, Fall 2017.
A penthouse in New York City. Faux leather walls. The latest in interior design. A young, married couple. What could possibly go wrong with people who have it all?
The materiality chosen for the set, from the leather in the walls, to every single piece of furniture on stage supported the concept behind this adaptation of Ping Chong's original play: slick surfaces hide rot.

A leather imitation in vinyl was glued to Hollywood flats, to be painted in the right tone of wine red.

The first coat was rolled into the flats, while some texture was added simultaneously to reveal the leather marks.

Unlike the flats, the frames that were later superimposed into the walls didn't had the vinyl covering from the start. A full paint treatment was executed to recreate the leather texture on them, in dark brown.
